Somatic Movement
Joint Rotation Links
Turning Fire and Water
Stand in Wuji with legs shoulder width apart. Do the movement slowly . If there is any pain at any point, stop the movement. if you have a recent injury, begin at 40% of your maximum movement. As you do the movements slowly, you are mindfully noticing how the shoulder girdle and elbow are moving the arm. Hips face forward. This movement works with the rotator cuff, shoulder girdle and elbow and is very useful in recovery from frozen shoulder and other damage to the shoulder…good for prevention and rehab work. It strengthens and Stabilizes the shoulder. Palms begin back to back and let the movement guide the flow of the fingers. Move 3, 6 or 9 rotations in one direction and then do the same number in the other direction. It may not be necessary to continue this gentle movement once the shoulder recovers more and you can focus on the less gentle and more stregthening movements after that. When you do any of these movements, have the tip of your tongue touch the upper pallet behind the front teeth. Regular practice will help release tension on a regular basis so it does not build up. Range of motion in these joints will increase safely over time. You may find that you can’t do a full range of motion at first if there is some injury. Continue to work with the movement each day and you will see improvements. All of these movements if practiced at least 3 days a week will be very beneficial to your health and longevity.
